Arctic eDNA

Unbelievable how indestructible Victorinox products are: In 2022, one of our participants lost his Victorinox knife on a hike on a remote island. 2 years later, on July 2, 2024, we were taking eDNA samples near the island and went to take a look. Despite the extreme arctic conditions, we found the Victorinox knife intact on N70.124 E19.404 and can now send it back to the owner.

Let’s go sampling for eDNA and clean up the North-Norwegian coast from plastic!

Below the remote bay where on 29 March 1941, the fishing boat Brattholm was attacked by a German vessel. Read about the incredible true story of Jan Baalsrud and watch the film “The 12th Man“.

After a hard time sampling, our new friends Øyvind and Jeanette Pettersen hostet us in Kaltfjord, where we gained new energy and were able to set off for a new adventure: To climb Stetind, Norway’s national mountain and the most beautiful TOP in Norway… already the 2nd TOP on the SEA2TOP project.

Soon after we reached the summit, there were helicopters and drones everywhere. A realty TV show from the Netherlands dropped off participants, cameramen and lots of equipment and filmed the “difficult climb” to the summit. They were a bit confused to see the 6 year old Vital and the 8 year old Mia up here … this was not fake ;-).

On the way to our old friend Halward on the island of Grytøya, we made a stop at Josef and Meline in Grøsnes, Gretangen. They have big plans to build an interesting eco-center.
At Halvard’s farm we recovered from the climb. Sabine was delighted with his music shed. Halvard helped us replace the starter motor. In the past, it happened more and more often that the engine wouldn’t start when it was urgently needed.
Andri and Noé then did the maintenance work and are already good mechanics.

Thanks to Halvard we were fit again and the ship was ready to take further eDNA samples.

For Dario’s beloved uncle Bruno Häfliger we have erected a memorial cairn with a memorial message on an islet at N69.4.259E16.29.706, which is inhabited only by birds.
