Tödi – TOP #23

The weather in the Alps is very changeable with lots of stormy winds and difficult avalanche conditions.
Dario had to do a lot of mental work interpreting the weather maps and avalanche reports. Dario, together with Alegra, Christina and Marc, were the only ones on the highest Glarus summit at 3614 meters.

On Sunday we started in the rain at around 800 m in Linthal. It wasn’t clear whether we would be able to reach the Fridolinshütte, as we needed visibility in the tense avalanche conditions after the passage of a cold front during the night. However, we interpreted the weather correctly and took advantage of the short weather window and were warmly welcomed by the hut wardens Lisa & Alfred.

Breakfast was served at 4am the next day. It was bright blue and paradisiacal weather conditions. Due to the strong glacier retreat, we first had to go down the moraine and then through the two glacier breaks.

After that there was a lot of snow, the tracks were very strenuous and we only made very slow progress. We were constantly roped up to the summit due to the risk of falling through crevasses.

We reached the summit shortly after midday.

We quickly made our way back and were back in Linthal in the late afternoon when the stormy Föhn wind set in.
